在古代的中国，有一个老头。
In ancient China, there was an old man.
有一天，他的马丢了，
One day, he lost his horse,
他不知道马跑到哪里去了。
he didn’t know where the horse went.
他的邻居们都来安慰他。
His neighbors all came to comfort him.
可是，他对邻居们说：“你怎么知道这不是福呢？”
But he said to his neighbors:
“How do you know this is not good luck?”
几个月之后，
After a few months,
他的马不但回来了，
his horse not only came back,
还带回了另一匹马。
but also brought another horse back.
他的邻居们都来恭喜他。
The neighbors all came to congratulate him.
可是他对邻居们说：“你怎么知道这不是祸呢？”
But he said to the neighbors:
“How do you know this is not a disaster?”
老头的儿子喜欢骑马。
The old man’s son liked horseback riding.
有一天，儿子正在骑这匹新马。
One day the son was riding on the new horse.
突然，他从马上摔下来，
Suddenly he fell from the horse,
他的腿断了。
and broke his legs.
邻居们都来安慰老头。
The neighbors all came to comfort the old man.
可是，他对邻居们说：“你怎么知道这不是福呢？”
But he said to his neighbors:
“How do you know this is not good luck?”
结果，一年以后，
As it turned out, after one year,
战争开始了，
a war started,
年轻的男人们都需要去打仗。
all young men were required to fight in the war.
儿子因为腿断了不能去打仗，
The son couldn’t fight in the war because of his broken legs,
所以没有死。
so he didn’t die.
中国的道教相信：
Chinese Taoism believes:
福祸相依。
福： good luck, blessing, good fortune
祸：misfortune, disaster
相依：dependent on each other
福祸相依：Good fortune follows upon disaster；disaster lurks within good fortune.
当你成功的时候，
When you succeed,
不要高兴得太早。
don’t be happy too early.
当你失败的时候，
When you fail,
不要放弃得太快。
don’t give up too fast.
因为，塞翁失马，焉知非福。
Because, the old man lost his horse, how do you know it’s not good luck?
